Bedi Shield for dental care

Bedi Shield

About the Bedi Shield

Caring for someone with dementia, stroke, autism, young children, or those with support needs often involves administering their dental health. If the individual in your care is unable to self-administer their own dental care routine, your role as a carer may involve brushing and examining their teeth and gums in order to keep the mouth healthy.

In doing so, you will be able to spot any problems early, though using a finger to keep the care recipient’s mouths open during the process can be uncomfortable:

  • Health and Safety issue:  As a care giver you are at risk of being bitten by the person receiving care who might involuntarily clench their teeth.
  • The experience can be traumatic for the care recipient whose neck and jaws are strained in the process.
  • Inserting your fingers into a patient’s mouth is discomforting.

The Bedi Shield is designed to help carers and health professionals provide personal dental care to individuals who are unable to keep their mouths open during check-up or regular brushing times. This is all done in a safe and efficient manner.

Key Benefits

  • The carer’s finger is well protected within the robust core of the product.
  • Comfortable support for the care recipient who can rest their jaws on the device – the device can even act as a distraction for them, allowing you to focus on the task at hand.
  • Simple to use and clean.
  • The carer can quickly deliver an efficient clean in a less obtrusive manner.

Using the Bedi Shield for dental care

Place the finger into the Bedi Shield, using the finger with the best fit.  This finger is kept in the Bedi Shield throughout the cleaning or inspection of the mouth.  It is often easier for the carer  to stand behind the patient.

The Bedi Shield is inserted into one side of the patient’s mouth, resting comfortably between their teeth. The Bedi Shield is designed to keep the mouth open while the carer or health professional inspects the mouth and cleans the teeth and gums.

For professionals

Care homes, specialist dentists and health professionals

Quality dental health is crucial for the more vulnerable. As people get older a decline in dexterity and potential risk of dry mouth can result in dental diseases spreading more rapidly. If unchecked, poor dental health could also lead to other general health issues. For young children cavities are the most common chronic disease. Caries can affect a child’s nutrition, growth and weight gain. Carers and health professionals have a responsibility to deliver compassionate, effective duty of care for those unable to independently carry out the activities of daily living (ADLs). For the least independent, the professional’s remit of care should involve inspecting the mouth, cleaning teeth and gums or placing fluoride varnish on the teeth. For patients unable to keep their mouths open the care provider often has to use a finger to prop open the mouth. This poses a risk, as a patient might involuntarily clench their teeth, biting and potentially causing serious injury to the carer’s finger in the process. The Bedi Shield has been designed by industry expert Professor Raman Bedi to help carers and health professionals deliver compassionate duty of care under high health and safety standards. For carers

Dental support for those you love

As a friend or family carer your dental support is critical to the overall happiness and wellbeing of the person in your care. If your role involves cleaning or examining their mouth and teeth, our first product the Bedi Shield has been designed with you in mind. We understand that providing this level of personal dental support on a regular basis can be challenging. Implementing a routine dental clean or check up usually involves using your finger as a prop to help keep the mouth open while you brush the teeth or examine the mouth and gums. This presents a serious health and safety issue, as you risk getting your finger bitten every time you provide care. It can also be traumatic and uncomfortable for the person whose mouth is being cleaned; as their jaws are strained in the process. The Bedi Shield is designed to help you provide quality, compassionate care every single time.It protects your finger during the process and relieves stress for the care recipient who can rest their jaws on the Bedi Shield. We developed the Bedi Shield as a simple, easy to use solution and we’d love for you to give it a try.
