Fluoride in your water; The Great Debate

Since the 2000’s there has been an expansion in the coverage of artificial water fluoridation. In 2010 the US Center for Disease Control estimated over 204 million US residents were supplied with naturally or artificially fluoridated water. 6.1 million people in the UK receive water with fluoride content and these numbers are set to rise with the new Water Bill which gives local authorities the authority to compel water companies to add fluoride to water.

Fluoride is one of the controversial issues of dental care. In August 2013 Colwyn Jones one of Edinburgh’s leading dental experts and a consultant in dental public health for NHS Lothian said youngsters were being failed by the Scottish Parliament’s failure to act. For Colwyn Jones and other experts, compulsory fluoridation is considered the best way of improving Scotland’s dental health record, which ranks among the worst in Europe with only 55% of four and five-year-olds in the Lothians having no sign of tooth decay.

However fluoride has also been linked to brittle bones, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. A number of environmental groups and health practitioners are opposed to the move, fearful of toxic side effects. According to Jane Jones, campaign director of the National Pure Water Association, ‘There will undoubtedly be a huge row about the renewed proposal to add fluoride to drinking water on a wide scale in the UK….To medicate the whole population against their will is not the way to deal with tooth decay.’

The NHS Centre for Reviews and Dissemination found that children in fluoridated areas suffered 15% less decay because the enamel on their teeth was hardened, while there was no evidence of a bad effect on health. The alleged solution is finding the balance; using the right level of fluoride varnish required to deliver optimum results.

So what do you think?  Do you say ‘Yay’ or ‘Nay’ to fluoride in your water?
